Why you should visit Lapland
So why visit Lapland?
Situated above the Article Circle, this region is best known for its magical winter landscapes and northern lights. It got me thinking about what else has Lapland got to offer.
Initially, I thought about reading peoples reviews on Facebook about their real-life experiences, rather than what is covered in the travel brochures. I was expecting raving reviews on how magical it was, Father Christmas is real, flying through the sky on his sledge with his reindeers. The majority of people were raving about their experiences but there was also a few rare comments that complained it was a little like Disney World in some respects, slightly commercial with its souvenir shops and visitors had to queue to meet Father Christmas.
So what did my friends say regarding their visit?
After speaking to two friends who took their children to Lapland a couple of years ago they could not conceal their excitement whilst revisiting their memories telling me how wonderful it was, how their children were overwhelmed with the experience, how have adults they were transported back to their own childhood and came home believing in Santa again, loving the reindeer rides and the thrill of the snowmobiling.
What does Lapland offer?
To find out more about what Lapland has to offer I took to researching magazines, travel brochures and the internet.
WOW WOW WOW is all I can say, Lapland in certainly not just about Santa and all things Christmas! The standard and variety of accommodation are outstanding and to suit everybody’s style and budgets. From wooden Chalets to 5-Star hotels in the middle an area where there is no artificial light to spoil the fantastic display on view from hotel rooms with large glass windows taking in the dancing of the Northern Lights or glass igloos where you lie on your bed to watch the dazzling display above and lastly, there’s the famous Ice Hotel.
The Nitty-Gritty
The following villages caught my attention
- Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, is surrounded by amazing landscapes, ranging from rivers and crystal-clear lakes to ancient snow forests and snow-capped mountains.
- Kemi, the site of the famous SnowCastle with its amazing SnowRestaurant, SnowChapel and Children’s Land, cruises aboard the Sampo icebreaker ship from which you can also go for an “Arctic swim” in the thermal flotation suits.
- Rovaniemi, is considered the capital of Finnish Lapland, situated next to the Arctic circle. This town is best known as the home of Santa Claus, whom visitors can meet any day of the year at the Santa Claus Village.
Best time to visit?
December to March is an ideal time for a winter holiday in Lapland when both snow conditions and northern lights displays are at their peak. Christmas and New Year are the busiest periods during this season while February and March are generally more relaxed.
Food and Culture
Enjoy traditional slow food such as Souvas made from reindeer meat and locally caught Arctic Char or visit and learn about the daily lives and history of the Sami people, the native people of northern Scandinavia.
Activities & Day Tours
- Take a guided tour or spend a night inside one of the amazing ice or snow hotels

Weddings, Honeymoons or romantic trips
Lapland is not just about children it is a magical place for true romantics and for a unique honeymoon experience or even getting married if you want something different!
Can you imagine getting married at the Ice Hotel in the Ice Chapel or honeymoon in the Ice suite at – 5 degrees and I was pleased to read they also have warm rooms.
What would your friends and family have to say about you getting married in an ice chapel and spent your Honeymoon night in an Igloo? Having a white wedding somewhere small and romantic in the wooden chapel and then take a reindeer sleigh ride through the snow-covered forest. How beautiful and romantic would that be?
It definitely appeals for romantic trips with the choice of hotels and good food. Romantic Reindeer rides, gazing at the Northern lights through your Glass Igloo.
